The Palestinian-Israeli conflict has been at the centre of the world agenda for many years, starting with the efforts of the Jews to establish the State of Israel, and has deep historical roots. This problem is not only a regional conflict, but has become an important component of international relations and global peace. The book ‘The Changing World and the Palestinian-Israeli Question’ by Fatma Kevser Kaplan deals with this complex problem and analyses the Palestinian-Israeli problem chronologically, starting from the period before the establishment of Israel to the present day.
In the first part of the book, the developments until the establishment of Israel on 14 May 1948 are discussed. In addition, historical events such as the territorial losses suffered by the Palestinian people, the end of the Ottoman rule in the Middle East, the beginning of British control over the region and the birth of Zionism are analysed in detail.
The second part of the book ‘The Changing World and the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict’ deals in detail with the political developments and the wars between Palestine and Israel. In this part; the origins of the conflict, the strategies of the parties, important wars and their effects on the political balances in the region are analysed.
In the third part, the Palestinian problem has been analysed in the process from the Oslo Peace Talks to the present day. The contributions and effects of international actors in the region (USA, UN, Arab countries, etc.) to the resolution of the conflict are also discussed in detail.
Finally, the developments during the Joe Biden era, which took office after Donald Trump, were mentioned in general. In particular, the events in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood, which was the scene of major clashes, and the harsh intervention of Israeli forces in these clashes are discussed, while Israel's illegal actions are also mentioned.
Fatma Kevser Kaplan's book ‘The Changing World and the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict’ goes deeper into the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, emphasising the importance of the historical process, political and diplomatic developments and the steps to be taken to achieve peace. The author provides a balanced perspective by presenting information from various perspectives and offers the reader a wide range of views.
In conclusion, the book analyses the historical, religious and political background of the Palestinian territories in terms of Jews and Palestinians. It tells the story of the Jews‘ demand for the Palestinian territories and the Palestinians’ struggle not to give up the lands they own. The author criticises the lack of a solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and argues that possible sanctions should be imposed against Israel's occupations and atrocities.
