Abstract

The book is a comprehensive overview of China's rise on the global stage and its rivalry with the United States. The book analyses China's role in world politics, its economic growth, technological developments and foreign policy strategies. Edited by Rafet Akgünay and Mehmet Fatih Ceylan, the book consists of chapters written by expert authors. Each chapter analyses the economic, technological, political and military dimensions of the rivalry between these two powers.

Ali Rıza Büyükuslu is the author of the first chapter of the book. Our author takes part in this chapter with the title ‘US-China Technology Wars and Beyond’. He argues that the US started the technology war with China precisely under the name of fighting Chinese technology companies. This chapter provides a broad perspective of the technology rivalry between the US and China in general and makes predictions on how this rivalry may take shape in the future.

Sinan Akgünay is the author of the second part of the book. In this section, our author is titled ‘New Era in Global Finance: China's Unilateral and Multilateral Development Credits'. In this part of the book, our author discusses China's increasing influence in global finance and the economic and political consequences of this influence.

In the third part of the book, Burcu Ermeydan presents ‘Mega-Trade Agreements in the Indo-Pacific Region under China-US Competition’. This chapter analyses the multidimensional implications of BRI in detail and comprehensively discusses both the opportunities and challenges of the initiative. He acknowledges that this is a pioneering work for further studies that will overcome some of the shortcomings.

In the fourth part of the book, A. Bülent Meriç presents ‘China-Japan Rivalry in East Asia and its Implications for Turkey’. In his chapter, he focuses particularly on China's international strategies. He analyses how China's rivalry with the US will be shaped in the future. In the following pages, Veysel Tekdal presents a chapter titled ‘International Infrastructure Financing: US-China Rivalry and the Long Shadow of the Market' in the fifth section. In this chapter, the author focuses on China's economic policies and their global impact.

The sixth chapter is titled ‘US-China Conflict over the Korean Peninsula and the North Korean Nuclear Threat’ by Hakan Okçal. This chapter analyses China's diplomatic moves, regional and global effects, diplomatic rivalry with the US and the use of soft power.

In the seventh chapter of the book, Mehmet Fatih Ceylan analyses China's diplomatic moves, regional and global influences, diplomatic rivalry with the US and the use of soft power: A Comparative Content Analysis'. Here, he analyses China's strategies, regional security dynamics, security competition with the US and future security scenarios.

In the last chapter, Atahan Ünal and Ece Özben analyse ‘The Limits of Global System Reform : China's Rise, BRICS and the ‘Chinese Dream’'. In this section, they discuss the changes in the balance of power after the 2008 Global Financial Crisis and the BRICS' search for reforms in the global economic order led by China. In particular, the study analyses how China's post-crisis political economy strategies are integrated with the role of BRICS.

In general, the book emphasises the US sanctions on Chinese technology companies such as Huawei, China's technological independence goals and cyber security issues between the two countries.

It also discusses China's initiatives such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the New Development Bank (NDB), its financing policies under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and the economic and political impact of these loans on recipient countries.

The book is a valuable resource for readers seeking an in-depth understanding of China's rise and competition with the United States. The book presents the dynamics between the two superpowers in a broad perspective by comprehensively analysing the rivalry in different fields. It is a valuable work for analysing China's growing influence in global politics and its repercussions on the global economy and international relations.
